Community Mourns After Russell County Officer Dies in Line of Duty

The region mourns after Russell County Deputy Josh Phipps was killed in the line of duty Monday evening. The city of Russell Springs was put on alert during an active shooter situation. Details have not been reported yet but the Russell County Fiscal Court posted around 9:40 p.m. that Deputy Phipps had died. Phipps is originally from Adair County and the son of Adair County residents Pam and Donnie Phipps. Adair County Sheriff Josh Brockman and Deputy Josh Durbin had traveled into Russell County to assist in the incident and were part of a group of officers to come to Deputy Phipps' aid. Our prayers and sympathy go out to the family and the law enforcement community during this tragic loss.

Russell County Sheriff Derek Polston shared the following on social media.

A Grieving Message from your Sheriff, Family, Staff and Deputies.

It is with Great Sadness tonight/ this morning that I report to you the Loss of one of my Deputies in the Line of Duty, Russell County Deputy Sheriff Josh Phipps. The Kentucky State Police is conducting the Investigation, and will release more details as they become available. Deputy Phipps was assisting the Kentucky State Police and other Units looking for a suspect that had fled on foot. Gunfire was exchanged after locating the Suspect, and Deputy Phipps was struck by Gunfire, and Later passed away at the Russell County Hospital, Deputy Josh Phipps died a Hero, doing what he liked, Protecting and Serving Russell County. The Suspect who was being sought also succumbed to Gunfire. Please Keep the Phipps Family, Friends, Russell County Sheriff’s Office Family and Staff in your Prayers. Thank you all to all First Responders who was there to help and support us. Thank you to Adair, Casey, Clinton, Pulaski County Sheriff’s, Russell Springs Police , Jamestown Police ,who have offered Help and Support to help us cover calls at this tragic time. Thanks to all Police Officers from City’s across Kentucky that was there and reached out to our Community. Funeral Arrangements will be announced Later by his Family.
