The Adair County Lady Indians went into Tuesday night’s game against Glasgow with a record of five wins to seven losses, something that Head Coach Stacia Hill has mixed feelings about.
“We are getting better,” she said, which had been reflected last week when the girls scored two wins in a row against Butler County and Hart County. They went on to claim victories against East Carter and Louisville’s Holy Cross for the Vanous Lloyd Christmas Classic. There, they came in runners-up after a rematch against East Carter took the top spot from them.
After becoming Vanous Lloyd runners-up, though, the girls went on to lose two games against Green County and John Hardin. On January 3, Green County beat the Adair County Indians by almost 20 points, scoring 76 to 57. The Green County Dragons always seemed favored to win the match-up, however; they are currently the top team in District 18 with two district wins under their belt and a respectable 8 to 3 to 1 win percentage (the one being a tie). The JV Lady Indians would avenge the varsity athletes when, on the same day, they beat Green 52 to 15.
The Freshman Lady Indians would do similarly well when, on January 4, they played Metcalfe and Cumberland back-to-back winning both times. Against Metcalfe, the Freshman Lady Indians scored 39 to 23 (in spite of having an extra foul to their name). Against Cumberland on the same day, each team fought for every point. The game concluded with just over 50 points scored between both teams, and the Indians won 27 to 26 over the Panthers.
For the John Hardin game on Saturday, the girls performed better than they did against Green County, though still fell short of a win. John Hardin beat the Indians 56 to 45. Of the girls’ 45 points, nearly half of them were accumulated by Freshman Addison Bowman and Junior Kinzlee Akin. Bowman scored five two-point field goals out of ten attempted. Overall, she added 14 points to the scoreboard. Akin scored four two-point field goals and tallied up 11 points for the team.
Coach Hill says these losses don’t change the upward trajectory of her team, who are comprised largely of younger athletes.
“We are very young. And a lot of our girls don’t have varsity experience,” she said. “I hate to use that as an excuse, but we are building. We are building a relationship with these younger girls. It’s going to take some time. We need to start getting better, but we are getting better every day.”
