The skies were not the only thing stormy last Friday when the Adair County Indians washed out Caverna and went 36 to zero.
The Indians’ major win came in an abbreviated game. At the start of the third quarter, lightning threatened to cut the game off early. After a delay, head coaches from each team decided it was in everyone’s best interest to end the game. This was especially disappointing as the game was the Kentucky Cooperage Bowl held at Marion County High School. While the Indians were more than guaranteed a win given their score even had the game continued, having to end a bowl game early due to weather is not the desired outcome for spectators or players.
Even though this was a major blow-out win for the Indians, Head Coach Steve Stonebreaker still sees it as an opportunity to learn and avoid complacency.
“I was proud of our guys for taking care of business. We made a ton of big plays defensively and turned them over multiple times. And, offensively we scored every drive except for a one play fumble. I told our guys after the game that there were five things that we need to work on coming out of the game even though the scoreboard was lopsided in our favor,” Coach Stonebreaker said. “We know we have some big games coming up and it is imperative we improve in order to be our best, when our best is needed.”
The massive landslide win is even more impressive when looking at the individual statistics. Easton Jessie and Lane Grant both scored two touchdowns. Solomon Stonebreaker got two catches and a touchdown. Ryder Rogers scored three carries, seven tackles, and a touchdown. Brylan White got a 16 yard catch and a touchdown.
Adair’s rushing score was 10-149; their passing was 8-1-159. Comparing to Caverna, one can see a large gap emerge. Caverna’s rushing was 22-64 and their passing score was 1-2-27.
Coach Stonebreaker is looking ahead to the next game, saying, “We are thankful to all of those who came to support us in a big bowl game atmosphere. We are looking forward to our home opener against LaRue this upcoming week, and can’t wait to see our fans pack the stands for our guys.”
The weather forecast also looks far more promising for the LaRue game.
