Residents of Adair County and the surrounding areas are invited to attend two upcoming educational programs that aim to enhance both agricultural practices and wildlife management. These events, hosted by local experts and the Cooperative Extension Service, are designed to provide valuable insights and guidance for farmers, landowners, and wildlife enthusiasts.
Grain Crops Field Day - Sept 4, 9:30 a.m.
A Grain Crop Field Day will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 4 starting at 9:30 a.m.. Hosted by Alfred and Blake Corbin at their farm located at 3473 Bull Run Road, Columbia.
Key topics to be covered include deer management of soybeans, depredation permits, and the Hunters for the Hungry program, which connects hunters with opportunities to donate venison to those in need.
Attendees will also receive updates on grain crop management, learn about managing corn residue, and discuss the appropriate nitrogen rates following cover crops.
Guest speakers for the event include Chris Mason, a wildlife biologist with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR), Terry Partin, the local coordinator for Hunters for the Hungry, and Dr. Chad Lee, a Grain Crops Specialist from the University of Kentucky. Their expertise will provide valuable insights into the challenges and solutions facing local farmers.
Lunch will be provided to all attendees, making it a great opportunity to network and discuss the morning’s topics with peers and experts alike.
Wildlife Food Plot Establishment Workshop - Sept. 3, 6:30 p.m.
This workshop is perfect for hunters and landowners looking to enhance their properties by establishing food plots that support local wildlife. The workshop will be held at the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service, located at 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY 42728.
Participants will learn the fundamentals of creating successful food plots, including site selection, soil fertility, fertilizer applications, species selection, weed control, and ongoing monitoring & maintenance.
Whether you’re a seasoned landowner or new to wildlife management, this workshop will provide the essential knowledge to get started.
